Ashwagandha – strengthen your body and restore inner peace

Ashwagandha is called the queen of Ayurvedic herbs. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng, is an herb used in Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine. Its root has a horse-like smell and is said to impart strength and virility to the horse. In Sanskrit, ashva means "horse" and gandha means "fragrance." Various parts of the plant are used, but the most common form of supplement is an extract of its roots.

Why it's worth it.

- Lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol

- Can help reduce pain of various origins, such as joint soreness.

- Anti-anxiety and energizing effects

- Exhibits antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and stimulates the immune system,

- Can improve stamina by increasing hemoglobin levels,

- It is worth testing to see if using aswhagandha during the day or at night works better for us.

Ashwagandha is best known for its anti-anxiety and stress-relieving effects. In addition, a growing body of evidence supports ashwagandha's effectiveness in improving total sleep time and sleep quality in people with and without insomnia, improves VO2max, and preliminary evidence suggests that it also improves strength as well as recovery. Ashwagandha may also improve semen quality parameters in men with fertility problems.

Ashwagandha contains numerous bioactive compounds, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids and steroidal lactones. The steroidal lactones include vitanolides, which are believed to be responsible for most of the benefits of this plant. Most of ashwagandha's benefits are due at least in part to its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Ashwagandha can increase levels of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, while inhibiting lipid peroxidation.

As part of its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, ashwagandha also appears to affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis - which plays a key role in the stress response - as evidenced by its ability to reduce cortisol levels. (source)

Moreover, ashwagandha appears to alter the signaling of several neurotransmitters that are dysfunctional in anxiety disorders. Its ability to enhance GABAA receptor signaling is thought to underlie its benefits for sleep.

Ashwagandha may improve stamina by increasing levels of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen to the rest of the body), but further research is needed to confirm this effect. (source)

Ashwagandha's ability to improve reproductive health is attributed to its antioxidant effects combined with its ability to increase testosterone levels. This effect is more pronounced in men with infertility and low testosterone levels, but preliminary evidence suggests that ashwagandha may also increase testosterone levels in healthy men. (source)

Ashwagandha studies have used doses of 250-600 mg/day of the root extract. The most common dosing protocol is 600 mg/day divided into two doses, one taken in the morning with breakfast and the other in the evening. Evidence suggests that 600 mg/day is superior to lower doses in improving sleep. Similarly, 600-1000 mg/day may be more beneficial than lower doses for people who train intensely. (sources 1, 2)
