Bergamot orange (Latin: Citrus bergamium) is described as a combination of bitter orange and lemon. The polyphenolic extract of bergamot (containing flavanones including melittidine and bruteidine) is used in supplements for lowering blood cholesterol levels.

About 75 per cent of the available studies suggest its effectiveness in lowering LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol and triglycerides in dyslipidaemic patients. It is rich in the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryloneohesperidosides hesperetin (brutheridin) and naringenin (melitidin), which have the ability to inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis.

Hence, bergamot is used as a wound disinfectant and to combat certain bacteria (e.g. Echerichie Coli) or fungi (e.g. Candida). The active ingredients in bergamot have been shown to protect against oxidative stress, activate NF-κB transcription factors and consequently increase cell viability.
