Sodium Butyrate 300mg – support for gut health and microbiome balance

Intestinal bacteria produce Butyrate, an important short-chain fatty acid that supports digestive health, helps control inflammation and even helps prevent disease. To make Butyrate, gut bacteria convert dietary fiber found in whole plant foods. They are called "prebiotics" because they nourish and stimulate the health-promoting activity of beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome.

Sodium Butyrate 300 mg – supports intestinal barrier integrity and microbiome balanceWhy it's worth it?

  • Accelerates the recovery of intestinal epithelial cells damaged by various disease processes,
  • Enables proper regeneration, which has a beneficial effect on their condition and function - which translates into better absorption of nutrients,
  • It also supports the process of proliferation, i.e. proliferation of cells of the intestinal mucosa,
  • Has an anti-inflammatory effect,
  • Inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells in the colon,
  • Maintains normal pH in the intestines, thus protecting against infection,
  • Supports the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),
  • Reduces unpleasant abdominal pain, frequency of constipation and bowel problems, improves consistency of bowel movements

Butyrate is the main source of energy for colonocytes, the cells that make up the lining of the intestines. Unlike most other cells in the body, which use sugar (glucose) as their main source of energy, the cells of the intestinal lining (colonocytes) mainly use Butyrate. Without butyrate, these cells would not be able to perform their functions properly.

Members of the genus Firmicutes, a classification of bacteria, are well known for their butyrate production. More specifically, microbes such as Roseburia spp., Faecalibacteriumprausnitzii and Eubacterium rectale convert prebiotics, such as dietary fiber, into Butyrate. This three-way relationship is reciprocal. Butyrate provides fuel for colonocytes, and in return, these cells help provide an oxygen-free environment in which beneficial gut microbes thrive. This keeps inflammation under control, the gut cells healthy and the gut bacteria happy.

The anti-inflammatory action of butyrate reduces oxidative stress and controls free radical damage. The intestinal lining is the intestinal barrier. It selectively allows ingredients such as vitamins and minerals to leave the intestines, enter the bloodstream and get to where they are needed. At the same time, it stops toxins, pathogens and food compounds from entering the bloodstream and causing disease. Butyrate produced by intestinal microbes from dietary fiber provides the fuel needed by the cells of the intestinal lining. In this way, it maintains the integrity of the intestinal lining, preventing the occurrence of leaky gut.

Studies show that butyrate increases the secretion of intestinal hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY). GLP-1 increases insulin production and decreases glucagon production in the pancreas. PYY increases glucose uptake in both muscle and adipose tissue. Increased production of short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate in the colon, increases the release of these gut hormones, indicating potential benefits in controlling blood sugar levels and preventing weight gain.
